Dear Parents and Carers,

There is a wonderful “buzz” around the corridors of Osbaldwick Primary Academy right now. Between the rehearsals for the upcoming nativity performances, the sound of carols in the hall, and the increasing amount of glitter appearing in the classrooms, the excitement is palpable.

However, amidst the festivities, I am incredibly proud of how focused the children remain. December is a balancing act between celebrating the season and continuing our learning journey, and the children are managing it brilliantly. We have a packed calendar for these final few weeks, so please do take a moment to read through the dates below to ensure you don’t miss out on the magic.

Choir Perform to Lord Mayor

A huge thanks to Mrs Oldfield for leading our choir at The Christmas Cheer Reception for York Residents. Our pupils were amazing and entertained 200 elderly residents of York. Well done.

Mrs Messruther returns and staffing update

Welcome back to Mrs Messruther (our Assistant Headteacher) who returns from her maternity leave. Mrs Messruther will be leading Early Years and teaching in classes on The Lane.  For clarity Miss Kay is still the Reception teacher.

Mrs Wilson who has been teaching Y1 as a student teacher is finishing her teaching placement as she continues her development in another school. We wish her all the best and look forward to her return in Summer term.

Attendance

We’ll be announcing our prize winners in the last week of term.

Reading for Pleasure

Reading spaces and particularly our library remain a priority as we develop a culture where children develop a love of reading for pleasure. I would like to say a massive thank you to the parents who have already donated cushions, plants, and blankets. These items are already making the space feel much warmer and more inviting for the children.
Book fair
Thank you for your amazing support. Miss Gulc, our reading lead,  was delighted with the volume of sales and enthusiasm for reading from our children. With the commission earned from all sales this will go directly into replenishing reading books in our library. Please have a look at home for any books to return – we seem to be low in stock in some areas.
Michael Rosen Day
Children from Nursery to Year 6 celebrated Michael Rosen Day with great enthusiasm and creativity. Some classes had the exciting opportunity to join a live Zoom call with Michael Rosen himself, where they listened to his stories, poems and inspiring words about writing. Across the school, every class learned one of his poems to perform in a special celebration assembly. The day was filled with laughter, rhythm and a love of words.
Y3/4 Trip to Yorkshire Museum
Years 3 and 4 had a fantastic day out at the Yorkshire Museum, where history truly came to life! The children explored fascinating exhibits and discovered what life was like thousands of years ago. One of the highlights was getting the chance to handle real artefacts from the Stone Age, giving everyone a hands-on experience of the past. It was an exciting and educational trip that sparked lots of curiosity and enthusiasm for their history topic back at school.
Y5 Trip to Heavenly Desserts
Year 5 had a wonderful and enjoyable trip to Heavenly Desserts! The children had a fantastic time exploring the history and global development of the waffle. They learned about the key ingredients used in waffle making and how different countries have influenced the dessert’s evolution over time. It was a sweet, educational, and engaging experience for everyone!
Visitors to Reception
We have had visits from Dr Charlotte (a vet) and the police officers to enhance our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic.  As you can see the children loved learning meeting our specials visitors and finding out al about them.
Eco Workshops in School
Some of our pupils attended Eco workshops with students from York University to learn how to create a more biodiverse environment in school. It was a lot of fun and inspiring to meet our University volunteers. Thanks to Mrs Hine for organising.
Year 1 and 2 Trip to The Castle Museum
Dancers Perform at Theatre Royal
Our dancers were the finale at York Theatre Royal for a dance performance along with other schools. They were absolutely amazing! Thank you to Miss Pigg, Mrs Christmas, Mrs Leigh, Mrs Ferguson and Hannah from York Dance Space for organising.

Cornerstones Community Church Y3 and 4 Visit

A huge thank you to Cornerstones Community Church who invited us to their nativity which was engaging and fun.

Finally, I am thoroughly looking forward to welcoming you to our festive performances over the coming weeks. The children have been rehearsing tirelessly, and there is no better reward for them than performing for a full audience.

I cannot wait to see so many parents and grandparents filling the hall to celebrate this special time in school.

Mr Brown
