Forest schools

Through experiencing learning in safe and supportive outdoor spaces, children gain a sense of value for the wider, natural world, a sense of responsibility for their environment, in addition to self-esteem, confidence and physical and emotional strength. Playing outdoors is essential for young children, not just for their growing bodies, but for the development of their minds too. Outdoors they have opportunities for investigation, exploration, for creative experiences, for working together in imaginative play, for sharing and for co-operation. We have waterproof suits for everyone, so that weather is never a problem.

Forest School/Outdoor Learning Intent

At Osbaldwick Primary Academy we want each child to know that they are part of nature and that it is a part of them, feeling no sense of separation from it. Our aim is to encourage and inspire children through positive outdoor experiences. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and cooperate with others. The children play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become self-motivated.

We pride ourselves on the rich outdoor learning experiences available to our children each and everyday, underpinning the delivery of our curriculum. In addition to this, we offer weekly Forest School sessions for all children in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

  • Nursery children take part in a weekly Forest School session each Monday morning.

  • Reception children take part in a weekly Forest School session each Friday afternoon.
