Design and Technology

INTENT

At Osbaldwick Primary Academy, design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that is taught in all year groups through at least one topic per term, which includes one topic relating to food. Through the use of the Design and Technology Association’s ‘Projects on a Page’ we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Well-planned sequences of lessons, which link to class topics where suitable, immerse the children in the design and making process, from analysing existing products, through to evaluating the finished version made by the children. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare for this. Key skills and key knowledge for Design and Technology have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups. Design and technology lessons are taught as a block so that children’s learning is focused throughout each unit of work.
