Maths

INTENT

Content

At Osbaldwick, we want children to embrace the power of maths in a way that promotes mastery of all units covered. This ensures that our pupils not only have secure foundations in mathematics to apply to future study and life, but also encourage pupils to look at maths more aspirationally in terms of the doors it can open for future. We teach according to NCETM which is in-line with the national curriculum, and deliver lessons in a way that provides constant exposure to reasoning so that children are actively using maths skills to solve problems – as they will in later life.

Cohesion

The carefully sequenced steps are taken from the NCETM and follow a spiral curriculum This ensures that topics are covered in sufficient depth across the school and that learning is revisited to ensure progression for all.

Community

In maths, we promote open discussions, group activities and cooperative problem-solving, and give children practical knowledge and skills that they can apply in the real world.

Compassion

Peer support is one of our 5 a day scaffolds that recognises the value of collaboration and how valuable conversation is in children gaining confidence and deepening their understanding. Our approach is ‘mastery for all’ and this ensures that all children are supported in their learning of maths regardless of barriers.

Creativity

In maths, children are given challenges that elicit their curiosity, open-mindedness, imagination and problem solving.
