Design and Technology

INTENT

Content

Design and technology is taught in all year groups through at least one topic per term. It involves analysing existing products, learning skills, designing and making products and evaluating the finished version. Food is taught once per year. Children develop an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.

Creativity

Children design a variety of products from Superhero capes to purses. They use their creativity and imagination to make their product unique to them. 

Cohesion

Children build on early skills and knowledge throughout the year groups eg revisiting skills and developing them.  Eg in Lower Key stage 2 the children learn to sew cushions and then use their knowledge of different stitches to apply to a more complex item in Upper Key stage 2.  

Community

The children invite parents into school to showcase their work for example a ‘superhero cape’ fashion show.  They have a French cafe where they can talk about French food and culture. 

Compassion

In D and T, children are asked to collaborate and work together supporting each other to evaluate, design, make and assess their products.
